KELLIE MCELHANEY, PHD
Senior Advisor, Corporate Social Responsibility
Dr. Kellie McElhaney is an Adjunct Professor at the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley. She founded the Center for Responsible Business, which solidified corporate responsibility as one of the core competencies and competitive advantages of Berkeley-Haas. The Center has received global critical acclaim with The Financial Times rating Haas #1 in the world for corporate responsibility. She is now building an initiative around the economic and business value of investing in women within the Institute for Business and Social Impact. Kellie was part of the successful strategy development that led to the increase of Haas female MBA matriculates from 24% to 43%.
Her research and teaching focuses on three areas: (1) The business value of investing in women globally, in business, and in individual leadership expertise; (2) Analyzing and developing companies’ corporate responsibility strategy and its alignment with business objectives, competencies, and value creation; (3) Global macro trends and business solutions. She has written a book entitled Just Good Business: The Strategic Guide to Aligning Corporate Responsibility and Brand (2010), as well as delivered a TED talk.
Kellie teaches in the undergraduate, MBA, and executive MBA programs, as well as in execution education arenas inside and outside the U.S. Kellie received the Teaching Excellence Award in 2013. She writes case studies of companies who are investing in women (Wal-Mart, E&Y), and studies value-creation linkages between sustainability strategy and women in leadership.
Dr. McElhaney keynotes, consults and develops and teaches executive education for Global 1000 companies throughout the word in sustainability and women’s investment strategies. Her client list includes the following: Ernst & Young, NVIDIA, Paul Hastings, Orrick, Levi, Wal-Mart, GE Oil & Gas, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Vimplecom (Dubai/ the Netherlands), KAUST (Saudi Arabia), Nokia (Finland), Navigant, Ford Motor Company, PG&E, Driscolls Berries, Triage Consulting Group, Ulster Bank (Ireland), Frontline, Accenture, StatoilHydro (Norway), Yum! Kellie serves on the Board of Directors for Sierra Europe Offshore, LTD., the equity Advisory Boards for Closed Loop Fund and Soko Jewelery, the Sustainability Advisory Committees for Outotec and Paul Hastings, and the Advisory Boards for Orrick Women’s Advisory Council, Sedgwick’s Women’s Forum, and Pacific Community Ventures. She lives in the Oakland Hills in California and has two teen-aged daughters. She enjoys cooking, spinning, good wine, running, and is working very hard on mindful living away from constant technology attachment. She earned her BA from the University of North Carolina, her MA from Ohio University, and her PhD from the University of Michigan. Prior to moving in to academia, Kellie worked in retail banking.
